THE PROGRAM
Designed for healthcare professionals, this program will enhance and refine your communication skills by increasing your ability to effectively connect and engage with patients and colleagues. You will learn and apply practical strategies to transform your interactions and improve the quality of care you provide.
The curriculum includes:
- Communication Theory – Social Penetration Model, Excitation Transfer Theory, Reflexivity
- Communication Techniques – Types and styles of communication, motivational interviewing, types of questions and pitfalls, listening and responding skills, language sensitivity, self-awareness
- Sensitive Topics – End-of-life decisions, conflict/management, sexual and mental health, loneliness, isolation, family matters, triggers
- Practice – Includes conducting two motivational interviews as the interviewer and interviewee, peer observations, providing and receiving feedback from peers and trainer
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive:
- 15 hours of communication training
- 15 continuing education credits
- Certificate of Completion
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Attend all training sessions (15 hours of classroom instruction)
- Complete pre-and-post course assessments
- Complete a post-training survey
- Perform above expectations on the final practicum
- Lead one class discussion
PREREQUISITE:
To qualify for the program, you are a healthcare professional in the Indianapolis community who currently works with older adults and/or individuals living with a disability.
PROGRAM FEE:
The Nelle Worthington Fund covers all program costs; therefore, tuition and fees will be waived.

April 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29; 9am-12pm each day
