Instructor(s):

Dr. Sarah J. Reynolds, UIndy Physics & Earth-Space Science

Delivery Mode:

Online, asynchronous with weekly expectations

Content:

The total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, is expected to have a profound impact on Indianapolis and other communities along the path of totality who witness this spectacular natural phenomenon. In this course, we’ll prepare for this awe-inspiring event by learning about the science related to eclipses, as well as their impact throughout history on multiple areas of human interest and endeavor. Participants will also learn how to make a plan for safe, effective, and impactful viewing of the solar eclipse.

Each week we’ll provide a curated set of online resources – including video, audio, reading materials, and recommended activities. Participants are expected to use the posted materials to explore and learn about that week’s topic and then either discuss or respond creatively to it online. There will also be opportunities to engage further through attending special events virtually or on-campus. Bringing together current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members, this course promotes lifelong learning and celebrates the richness of bringing multiple perspectives into exploring science and its interdisciplinary connections.
